Islamabad: The Standing Committee on Defence decided to take legal action against Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief, Altaf Hussain over his recent statements against the Pakistan Army today as reported by ONLINE.
In his televised speech on May 1, the mercurial MQM leader criticised the military and said the party had always been discriminated against. The controversial speech drew sharp reaction from all quarters including the top brass of the Pakistan Army.
The committee, headed by Shaikh Rohail Asghar, strongly condemned Altaf’s anti-Army comment in his televised speech and passed the resolution against him.
“Strict action should be taken against the MQM chief,” members of the community said in the National Assembly today.
Secretary Defence (retd) Lt Gen Mohammad Alam Khattak assured the National Assembly’s Defence Committee that legal action will be taken against the MQM chief over his remarks.
“The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) has given its stance on Altaf Hussain’s statement and the Ministry of Defence has a similar stance,” Khattak said.
A member of the standing committee Asfandyar Bhindara raised objections over Altaf Hussain’s statements during the meeting and demanded legal action against the MQM chief. Committee Chairman Sheikh Rohail Asghar endorsed his views.
MQM’s Sanjay Parwani argued that this was not the most suitable forum for passing the resolution to which Asghar retorted that it was.
